The Provost’s Latin America/Caribbean Merit Scholarship provided 9 new international students from St. Maarten, Nicaragua, Colombia, Brazil, Peru, and the Dominican Republic, with scholarships for one or two semesters of the 2018-2019 academic year.

Through this scholarship, the students receive a scholarship of $500 for one or two semesters and classification as a Florida resident for tuition purposes, during the semester(s) of the scholarship.

International Students Alan Febraio Parma and Veronica Quintero Carrizo performed in the FSU Flying High Circus during the 71st Annual Home Show Series this spring.

“The circus is a place of wonderment where we can bring joy to people who watch our performances,” Parma said. “But most importantly, it is a special place where I found a second family miles away from home.”

These three exemplary FSU students, nominated for this prestigious award by FSU faculty and staff, were selected out of a competitive pool of over 10 nominees. Each of these students had made significant contributions toward fostering global understanding on campus, in the community, and abroad. 

Fifteen international students from FSU's Special Academic Programs (SAP) complete their yearlong program this semester, with most applying for FSU graduate programs in the fields of electrical engineering, public administration, finance, chemical oceanography, and communication.

Senior Jingwen Li, public administration major from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, said that the SAP program was of tremendous benefit to her. She is one of 14 students who hope to remain at FSU for graduate school.

Jared Tirone, FSU Peace Corps recruiter and graduate student in the College of Education’s International and Multicultural Education program, spoke with us about this event. “I’m most excited for students to learn about the life-changing aspects of the Peace Corps, and how the intercultural experiences shaped us as human beings,” Tirone said.

The CGE’s New International Student Advisory Board will co-host International Coffee Hour this Friday at The Globe from 5-6:30 p.m.

The ISAB was established by the CGE to enhance international student engagement at Florida State University. 

“We’re really excited to introduce ISAB to our international students this Friday,” said Emily Leyava, program assistant charged with coordinating the new board. “We want students to know that the board is focused on producing additional enriching programming geared toward increasing engagement with the larger FSU community.”

Florida State University’s Center for Global Engagement welcomes more than 110 new international students from 35 countries to campus this spring. To help new students succeed, CGE offered a luncheon and an orientation at The Globe where students met new friends and learned about FSU’s campus, resources, and maintaining their immigration status.

To introduce international students to Thanksgiving, FSU’s Center for Global Engagement (CGE) partnered with the Westminster Oaks Retirement Community whose residents welcomed about 60 students on Sunday, November 19, for a Thanksgiving dinner.

Students enjoyed traditional Thanksgiving cuisine – such as turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes – with Tallahassee residents. In addition, the CGE provided international food from several local restaurants.

The International Peace Scholarship (IPS) scholarship provides up to $12,500 for selected international women pursuing graduate degrees.

In 2016-2017, P.E.O. International awarded Xin Shan, an FSU international doctoral student in Industrial Engineering, an IPS award to help her pursue her degree in the U.S. before returning to her home country.

The Provost’s Latin America/Caribbean Merit Scholarship provided six new international students from St. Maarten, Dominican Republic, British Virgin Islands, Belize, and Ecuador with scholarships for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Through this scholarship, the students receive a scholarship of $500 per semester and classification as a Florida resident for tuition purposes.

This year, scholarship recipients are studying subjects from criminology, biological sciences, and economics to hospitality and sport management.
