To work on campus you will need:

J-1 Students

All students in J-1 status must always obtain written employment authorization from the program sponsor listed in box 2 of the DS-2019 form. Any employment or compensation for services done without specific written work authorization is illegal and can result in irreversible termination of the J-1 status, if the employment cannot be retroactively approved.

Some things J-1 students will need to consider when seeking employment opportunities are:

  • Work authorization is not guaranteed. Employment may be restricted to on-campus research or teaching opportunities in one’s field of study or may not be permitted at all. Students should consult with their program sponsor before beginning a job search or accepting an offer.
  • J-1 students may not be employed in a position that will require any pre-kindergarten through 12th grade activities of any kind, unless the work is strictly required in order to complete the degree program, and even then this can only be approved with specific authorization from the U.S. State Department which can take several weeks to obtain.
  • J-1 students may not be employed in any position that will require clinical counseling, therapy, child care, elder care, social work, or medical care, unless the work is strictly required in order to complete the degree program, and even then this can only be approved with specific authorization from the U.S. State Department which can take several weeks to obtain.
  • In most cases, scholarship stipend amounts will be reduced by the amount received from on-campus employment.
  • Employment Authorization can only be granted by the program sponsor listed in box 2 of the DS-2019 form.
  • It can take a month or more for a student to obtain employment authorization, due to the various levels of approval that may be required.
  • Employment Authorization can only be granted for up to one year at a time. Students will need to monitor the expiration date of their authorization and plan at least one month in advance to renew it.
  • Employment Authorizations are specific to a particular place of employment, dates of employment, hours per week, rate of compensation and type of employment (assistantship vs. on premises employment). Any changes require additional sponsor authorization.
  • Students may only work up to the total number of hours per week approved on their work authorization, and never more than 20 hours per week in the Fall and Spring Semesters. Additional hours may be approved during the summer, which is considered an annual break.
  • All employment details are recorded in the student’s government immigration record, and a written authorization document is also provided in order to properly annotate the I-9 form. The DS-2019 alone is not an employment authorization document.
  • All on-campus employment authorizations become void on the date the student graduates or otherwise ends their J-1 status.
  • Students whose program sponsor provides Grantax services for annual tax preparation should not use Glacier Tax Prep, but should enter Glacier information upon employment in order to receive any tax treaty benefits on tax withholding to which they may be entitled.

Students whose program sponsor listed in box 2 of the DS-2019 is FSU, must complete the J-1 Student Employment Authorization Request e-form in Nole Start under J-1 Student Services with their hiring department. The request for work authorization must be submitted at least one month in advance of the employment start date:

Students whose program sponsor is FSU will need to apply for academic training for any FSU employment conducted after graduation or for any internships (paid or unpaid, required or not). More information regarding academic training is at (link to Academic Training).
