You can count only 1 course retroactively. This course must be global/cultural, 3-credit hours, and taken on the FSU Tallahassee campus. You cannot add events and sustained experiences retroactively.
The Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC) includes three core components, described below.
Academic Courses
You take a total of four academic courses: 1 required course and 3 electives from a list of 500+ liberal studies courses that enhance understanding of global issues and international cultures.
You submit a reflection paper on each course, within 10 days of the end of the course.
1 Required Course: Global Perspectives (IDS2431 or IDS 2460)
- Though not required, we recommend you take this course in your first year of the GCC.
- This course satisfies FSU Liberal Studies requirements.
3 Elective Courses: choose from a list of 500+ pre-approved courses
- Elective courses must have a global/cross-cultural focus, be 3 credit hours, and offered through the FSU Tallahassee campus.
- Elective course list is shared with currently enrolled students through the GCC Canvas page.
Intercultural Events
You attend 8 pre-approved intercultural events on FSU campus. You must choose 2 events from each of the categories below.
You submit a reflection paper on each event, within 10 days of attending the event.

- Social
Interact with other students from different cultures (example: International Coffee Hour) - Cultural
Learn about a different culture (example: Global Café) - Experiential
Use all of your senses to engage in a cultural activity (example: International Bazaar) - Educational
Listen to lectures from experts on global issues (example: CGE's Engage Your World Seminar Series)
Sustained Experience
You must also participate in a sustained international experience that helps you apply your intercultural competence skills over a time.
Sustained experience can be:
- International like study abroad, internships abroad, or a cultural exchange. Their duration may vary, but a minimum of 7 days is required OR
- Domestic like internships, volunteer experiences, international peer mentorship. They are typically 75 hours or more.
The experience must be pre-approved by GCC advisors.
You submit a reflection paper on your sustained experience, within 10 days of completing it.
