Global Exchanges Student Spotlight: Leona Rindle

Leona Rindle, a junior majoring in Psychology and Human Rights & Social Justice, spent the Fall 2024 semester studying at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia, through Florida State University’s Global Exchanges program. Her experience abroad proved to be transformative both personally and academically, offering her invaluable lessons and memories that will stay with her for years to come.

For Leona, the decision to study on a Global Exchange stemmed from her desire to expand her worldview and immerse herself in a new culture. “I wanted to study abroad to broaden my perspectives more and get to know a culture that I knew little about. I also wanted to take the opportunity to travel,” she shared. Traveling throughout Australia helped Leona become more comfortable with herself and her new experiences. “I‘ve learned to be a lot more comfortable with myself and new experiences by solo traveling throughout Australia,” she said. In addition to her personal growth, her coursework deepened her understanding of First Nations peoples, reaffirming her commitment to pursuing international human rights law after graduation. “I also learned a lot about First Nations peoples in my classes, which has only reaffirmed my interest in pursuing international human rights law after college,” Leona explained.

Adjusting to life in Australia came with its share of challenges. “Being exposed to a new country and culture all by myself” was one of the biggest hurdles she faced. Despite this, Leona embraced the opportunity to navigate these challenges independently, building resilience and confidence along the way.

One of the highlights of Leona’s time in Australia was her visit to Uluru, where she learned about Aboriginal culture and the spiritual significance of the iconic landmark. “Going to Uluru and learning about the Aboriginal culture and Uluru‘s significance to them” was an unforgettable experience that enriched her understanding of Australia’s indigenous heritage.

Leona noted that her academic experience at Griffith University differed from her studies at Florida State. “The grading was a lot harsher and based on fewer projects,” she said. However, she appreciated the willingness of her professors to support students throughout the semester.

Leona took full advantage of her time abroad by scheduling her classes to allow for extended weekends, which she used to explore Australia’s breathtaking landscapes. From Airlie Beach to Sydney, Melbourne, Cairns, Byron Bay, K'gari Island, North Stradbroke Island, and even a road trip around Tasmania, Leona’s travel itinerary was nothing short of impressive. “It was absolutely incredible to be able to see so many beautiful places,” she said. After her semester ended in mid-October, she continued traveling for two months, further enriching her experience.

Leona encourages other FSU students to take the leap and participate in a Global Exchange program. “Absolutely do it! It is completely worth it, and you will get so many amazing memories from it!” she said.

Leona’s journey highlights the transformative power of studying abroad. Her experiences have not only shaped her personal and academic growth but also laid the foundation for her future aspirations in international human rights law. For FSU students considering a Global Exchange, Leona’s story serves as an inspiring testament to the opportunities and rewards that await those who step out of their comfort zones.
