S M Mushfiqul Hoque: Bridging Cultures and Engineering Sustainable Solutions at FSU
When S M Mushfiqul Hoque journeyed from Bangladesh to Tallahassee in pursuit of a Ph.D. in civil engineering from Florida State University, he knew he wanted more than just academic knowledge; he wanted to make an impact on sustainable urban solutions. Intrigued by the resources and research expertise at the Rider Lab in the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Mushfiqul found FSU to be the ideal place to realize his vision. He successfully defended his dissertation this past summer and began working at Geosyntec Consultants as a Senior Staff Professional in Orlando, Florida on Optional Practical Training (OPT).
After discovering FSU through a LinkedIn post advertising a research assistant position, Mushfiqul was captivated by the inclusivity and diversity at the university. “The topic of the research and the diversity and inclusive nature of FSU really inspired me to study here,” he shared. His dedication has led him to work on two federally funded projects aimed at creating sustainable cities across Florida. This work has allowed him to publish two journal papers and present at five international conferences — accomplishments he considers to be among his greatest achievements at FSU.
Beyond his research, Mushfiqul has played an active role in the FSU community by serving as president of the Bangladeshi Students Association for the 2023-24 session. “Showcasing my own culture through the Bangladeshi Students Association has been a rewarding experience,” he said, underscoring his commitment to bridging cultures and creating a welcoming environment for fellow students.
Mushfiqul’s experience of studying in the U.S. has had its challenges, particularly in adjusting to a new environment far away from family. However, he found support among a close group of friends, which helped him overcome feelings of isolation and navigate the challenges of living and studying abroad. “Being away from my family and adjusting to a new environment was challenging, but surrounding myself with good company allowed me to stay focused and successfully manage the difficulties,” he reflected.
When asked about the best part of his time at FSU, Mushfiqul noted the opportunity to engage in innovative research amid the campus's natural beauty and the chance to connect with international students from diverse backgrounds. These experiences, he says, have enriched both his academic and personal growth.
As he looks forward to his future career, Mushfiqul credits FSU with preparing him to succeed. He believes his time at FSU was instrumental in building his professional network and helping him secure a role as a Senior Staff Professional at a consulting firm in Orlando. “FSU provided a strong academic foundation and research opportunities that developed my skills,” he said. “The university’s supportive environment and access to diverse resources have been instrumental in helping me adapt and thrive in a real-world work environment.”
Mushfiqul’s journey at FSU has been marked by personal growth and resilience. “Facing difficulties away from home has strengthened my ability to adapt and persevere,” he explained. “This growth has made me more confident and capable in both personal and professional aspects of my life.”
For incoming international students, Mushfiqul’s advice is to take full advantage of all that FSU offers, academically and socially. “Get involved in student organizations; it’s a great way to meet people and learn from diverse cultures,” he suggested. “Balance your studies with self-care, and build a strong support system to make the most of your time here.”
As Mushfiqul continues his journey, he remains dedicated to his mission of engineering solutions for a more sustainable world. His work and story are a testament to the power of resilience, cultural connection, and academic dedication—a true embodiment of the global spirit at Florida State University’s Center for Global Engagement.
