Karolina Calderin Vargas Leverages Global Citizenship Certificate Scholarship for Life-Changing Experience in Japan

Karolina Calderin Vargas, a junior at FSU majoring in Public Health and Human Development and Family Science with a minor in Anthropology, has made the most of her time at FSU by participating in the Global Citizenship Certificate (GCC). Recently, she was awarded the GCC scholarship, which allowed her to embark on an enriching Global Exchange experience at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan during the summer of 2024.

Karolina's journey with the GCC began in the spring of 2023. She was drawn to the program because of its requirement to complete a sustained global experience. She noted, "The GCC provided me with the tools to prepare for a global exchange," Karolina said. "The program has completely changed my perspective on life."

The GCC scholarship helped ease some financial concerns for Karolina, allowing her to participate in the Global Exchange program in Japan. She described the experience as a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity where she formed lasting friendships and created memories she will cherish forever.

During her time at Waseda University, Karolina immersed herself in the local culture and community—a skill she credits to her experiences at FSU. The GCC’s intercultural events had prepared her to engage in diverse conversations about culture with people from various backgrounds. In Japan, she put these skills to good use by attending community events and making connections with local Japanese friends who guided her through the intricacies of Japanese culture.

"I was able to immerse myself in Japanese culture thanks to the Japanese friends I made and their guidance," she said. "I attended both religious and social community events, which enriched my understanding of the culture."

Karolina's curiosity led her to explore Japan's cultural and historical landmarks, fulfilling her desire to experience the country's rich heritage. Among her most memorable experiences were visiting the Fushimi Inari Shrine, the historical city of Kyoto, where she glimpsed a Geisha, the Kyoto River, the Bamboo Forest, Nikko, Kamakura and the Disney Sea. She also delved into Japan's famous onsen (hot springs) culture, which provided her with an opportunity for self-reflection.

"I love Japanese historical architecture, so I wanted to explore as many temples and shrines as I possibly could," Karolina said.

Throughout her time in Japan, Karolina not only explored the country but also grew personally. Living in a place where she initially didn’t speak the language, she quickly developed basic communication skills and gained a deeper sense of independence.

"Japan gave me the chance to be more independent," she reflected. "I was able to explore parts of Tokyo alone because of how safe the city is. Through this, I got to learn more about myself."

Balancing her academic responsibilities with her desire to travel was challenging but rewarding for Karolina. She managed to juggle four classes while still making time to explore and experience life in Tokyo.

Despite the challenges, Karolina emphasized that the friendships she made were among the most meaningful aspects of her Global Exchange experience.

"I was looking forward to making friends, and I did just that," she said. "I was very sad when my global exchange ended, as I knew that it would be almost impossible for the friend group I made to be all together again since we all live in different parts of the world."

As she reflects on her time abroad, Karolina hopes that her experience will leave a lasting impact on her personal and academic life. Her time in Japan not only broadened her cultural horizons but also provided her with valuable life lessons that she will carry with her as she continues her studies at FSU.

With an expected graduation from FSU in Spring 2026 and a GCC graduation date in 2025, Karolina is set to continue applying the insights and skills she gained through her participation in the GCC and on her Global Exchange as she progresses in her academic journey.

When asked what she would tell someone considering a Global Exchange she said, “I am always telling all my friends to go on a Global Exchange. If I could do it once more, I would not hesitate to go. So, I would tell a student who is considering it to do it. You only live once, explore a new country, and make long-lasting memories.”
