Student Spotlight: Margaret Clum
Margaret Clum, who recently graduated from Florida State with a degree in Marketing, completed her last semester participating in a Global Exchange program at Hanyang University in Seoul, South Korea.
Living in a new place comes with all sorts of exciting experiences, especially for Margaret as she was able to immerse herself in local culture. When asked about her favorite part of day-to-day life in South Korea, she said, “The fast-paced nature and efficiency in various aspects of life. I was amazed at the complex public transportation system, and it made getting around the city a breeze.” Aside from this, she participated in many activities, finding her favorite spots around the city. “I loved visiting the historical architecture that is nestled in the bustling city of Seoul, specifically Gyeongbukgung Palace and Changdeokgung Palace.” ... “The business administration college at Hanyang University also had a global support club called Glitters that hosted events and activities for international students. It was a fun way to connect with both local and international students in the same college,” said Margaret. As far as her absolute favorite memorable moment during her exchange program, she goes on to talk about the network of friends she made while there: “I was so worried that I would be all alone on my birthday in a new country. I remember finishing classes that day and seeing the beautiful sunset from the top of campus. Then my friends came to surprise me with a cake, and we went out for dinner – it was so sweet I almost cried. I am so grateful to have met such amazing people who really made me feel special.”
With living in another country, there are bound to be challenges, which Margaret faced head-on while adapting to a new culture and environment, during her five-month stay. “There were a handful of times that I felt overwhelmed and distanced from my friends and family back home. Living alone in a new country, or any place really, is hard. Staying connected with the network friends I had made there, video calls back home, and eating food that reminded me of home helped me from getting too homesick. I was expecting to feel a bit more removed from my friends and family, but I developed a greater appreciation and a stronger connection with those supporting me back home,” said Margaret. But through these challenges, she could learn more about herself and grow as a student and a person. She went on to say “I learned that I am much tougher than I previously thought. I am not usually an adventurous person; I like to stay in my comfort zone, so this was a completely new experience. I was pushed to be more social and try new things.” ... “This program helped me obtain a well-rounded education and learn from the perspectives of my professors and peers from all around the world. I also pushed myself to be very social to make meaningful connections and build a support network of friends.”
Overall, Margaret looks back fondly on her time abroad and hopes to be able to have more similar experiences. “This experience has helped me solidify the two goals I have for my future: wanting to live abroad and working in international marketing. I am considering moving back to Seoul in the future – I loved living there!” said Margaret. Having such a momentous experience there she hopes others will take up the opportunity, as she did. When asked about advice she’d give to students considering a global exchange program, she said, “Do it – it was honestly the quickest period of personal and professional growth I had at FSU! Participating in this program is a very rewarding experience, but you do have to put in the work to get the most out of it. Research the country and culture ahead of time. Get an understanding of how much of the language you will need to know to get by and the social norms that might be different in the U.S. And it is never too late to apply – I did this program in my final semester at FSU. Take risks, step out of your comfort zone, and get involved!” ... “It was an amazing opportunity, and I am so appreciative of everyone who played a part in making it a reality. I highly recommend this program for all students at Florida State!”
