Staff Spotlight: Mia Kawamitsu
Mia Kawamitsu, a recent graduate from Iowa State University from Council Bluffs, Iowa, spent a transformative summer interning at the Center for Global Engagement (CGE) at Florida State University. With a dual major in Journalism/Mass Communication and International Studies, Mia's academic background and passion for global issues perfectly matched her role at the CGE.
During her internship, Mia embraced a multifaceted role, assisting with intercultural programming and immigration services. “My responsibilities include supporting the execution of cultural events such as International Coffee Hour and reviewing online modules to update the FSU resources available for international students,” she explained.
Mia’s journey to the CGE began with her selection for the NASPA Undergraduate Fellows Program (NUFP), which supports underrepresented students exploring careers in student affairs and higher education. “I got a NUFP internship at FSU after connecting with Zduy Chu, Ed.D. at this year’s NASPA Annual Conference in Seattle,” she said. In Chu’s role, he serves as the Assistant Vice President for the Division of Student Affairs. In this role, he is responsible for providing senior-level management, leadership, and vision in the division and within the Student Life portfolio which is comprised of Fraternity & Sorority Life, University Housing and Childcare, New Student and Family Programs and the Panama City campus Student Affairs.
Mia’s academic background proved invaluable during her internship. “My background in journalism and mass communication has equipped me with extensive experience with marketing and communications both digitally and interpersonally. I’ve been able to utilize these skills to create graphics and reports to effectively promote CGE programs,” she noted. Additionally, her involvement in student organizations and collaboration with university administration on various events gave her insights into programming and event management, preparing her to support CGE's mission effectively.
A standout moment for Mia was assisting with the setup and check-in process for the International Coffee Hour. “Each week, I thoroughly enjoyed the diverse and delicious foods, but what truly stood out was witnessing the enthusiastic turnout from the FSU community and the lively engagement of attendees,” she recalled. “Contributing to such a unique and successful event was incredibly fulfilling.”
Throughout her internship, Mia developed a deeper understanding of immigration services and honed her adaptability skills. “I enhanced my adaptability skills by quickly familiarizing myself with a new university environment and its specific departments to effectively lead informative tabling sessions and represent the program at resource fairs,” she said.
Mia’s time at the CGE also had a profound impact on her career aspirations. “Working at the CGE this summer has reaffirmed my passion for student affairs in higher education and my commitment to supporting student success, especially those from underrepresented and international backgrounds,” she shared. This hands-on experience underscored her preference for in-person work environments, a valuable insight for her future career choices.
Her internship at the CGE also broadened her perspective on global issues. “The regulations around Foreign Countries of Concern in Florida have given me insight into the complexities of international relations and their impact on educational opportunities,” she explained. Mia recounted an interaction with a student from Bangladesh, a country facing significant challenges due to political instability, which deepened her understanding of global interconnectedness.
Mia particularly valued the opportunities for cultural exchange at the CGE. “Through events such as the International Coffee Hour and viewing parties for the Olympic Opening Ceremony, I had the opportunity to engage with students from diverse backgrounds and gain insights into their unique experiences,” she said. These interactions enriched her appreciation for cultural exchange and global education.
Looking ahead, Mia offers advice to future CGE interns and staff. “Take time to talk to the CGE staff! Everyone at the CGE has had such interesting international experiences and has unique perspectives to share,” she advised.
As for her next steps, Mia plans to return to Iowa for the remainder of the summer. “I hope to begin working in student affairs where I can continue to serve students and create supportive environments and equitable spaces for the personal and academic success of underrepresented students,” she said. “After gaining more work experience, I plan to pursue a master’s or Ph.D. program.”
