The Provost’s Latin America/Caribbean Merit Scholarship provided six new international students from Peru, Bolivia, St. Maarten, and Brazil, with scholarships for the 2021-2022 academic year.

Students receive $500 for one or two semesters and classification as a Florida resident for tuition purposes during the semester(s) of the scholarship.

2021-2022 Scholarship Recipients include:

• Mauricio Oelsner Gutierrez from Bolivia studying finance
• Chelsea Wyatte from St. Maarten studying psychology
• Lorenzo Mondacca from Bolivia studying management
• Matheus Brandao from Brazil studying civil engineering
• Rodrigo Gomez from Peru studying applied and computational mathematics

"The LAC Scholarship is enabling me to receive one of the best college educations in the world, and I am really proud of what I accomplished during my first semester at FSU," Oelsner Gutierrez said. "Because of this scholarship, I had the possibility to start my career path, and hopefully, I will be able to accomplish all my professional, athletic, and personal goals in the future."

Abigail Arrieta, a junior from Peru studying human resource management, says that being a recipient of the LAC scholarship has encouraged her to participate in opportunities that further her academic and professional growth.

"Being awarded with the Provost’s Latin America/Caribbean Scholarship taught me that working hard has its rewards," Arrieta said. "The scholarship has allowed me to take advantage of professional and educational growth opportunities, such as being part of UROP. LAC will also help me continue to pursue my dreams, including completing my B.S. degree and pursuing a master's degree at FSU."

“The LAC Scholarship has been of huge help to me and my family in the financial aspect, but it is also very honoring and it inspires me to do my best in order to achieve my goals," Gomez said. "I am an aspiring Actuarial Science major, and I aim to become a professional that excels in the field.”
