FSU Exchange Student Checkmates the Competition in Florida Chess Scene
Alessandro Balza, an international exchange student from the University of Pavia in Pavia, Italy, is making a name for himself in Florida’s vibrant chess community. Studying political science during his time abroad at FSU, Balza brings not only academic focus but also exceptional talent to the chessboard.
Balza first learned about a local competition from Global Nole, Ellie Usher. He entered the FAMU-FSU Chess Tournament on March 7 and emerged as the overall champion.
His journey with chess began relatively recently. “I started playing during the pandemic because I had nothing better to do,” he said. “Then I became a fan and started playing seriously in 2022.” His first official competition was the Provincial Championship of Como back in Italy. Despite being new to Florida, Balza says he quickly found his place among local players. “Florida has a big chess community, and I felt instantly a part of it,” he said. “I am proud to be a part of this chess community.”
For Balza, getting involved beyond the classroom has been an important part of his exchange experience. “As an exchange student, it is really important to take part in every activity one can because this makes your time off class a time to look forward to,” he shared. “It also helps to meet new people and to gain the confidence to be yourself in such a different environment.”
Balza is now preparing for his next challenge: the 2026 Florida State Collegiate Chess Championship in Gainesville this April where he will compete against some of the strongest collegiate players in the state. The Center for Global Engagement wishes Alessandro Balza the best of luck as he heads to Gainesville to represent Florida State University on the state stage.
