Enroll in FSU's Global Citizenship Certificate, Gain Global Perspectives
FSU's Global Citizenship Certificate prepares undergraduate students for the new challenges of living and working in an increasingly globalized world through a combination of academic courses and intercultural experiences.
Enrolled students must take Global Perspectives, the certificate's required course that explores global issues and helps build intercultural competencies; choose three elective courses from an approved list of 500+ liberal studies courses; attend eight intercultural events; and complete one sustained intercultural experience domestically or abroad.
"The Global Citizenship Certificate is a pathway to learn about the world and cultures within it," Dr. Tanu Kohli Bagwe, Acting GCC Program Director and Teaching Faculty. "Through coursework, intercultural events, and sustained experiences, we guide students in taking charge of their intercultural competence development. Each experience in the certificate serves to develop a holistic, interlinked set of skills needed to become an empathetic individual, a critical thinker, and an advocate for multiculturalism and inclusion."
This semester, 100 FSU students taking the Global Perspectives course benefit from active intercultural engagement and learning with Brazilian students through FSU's Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) partnership with The Technology College of Americana (FATEC)in São Paulo, Brazil.
Through a combination of intercultural contacts and active reflection, the COIL initiative helps Global Perspectives students gain essential cross-cultural skills and global competencies while meeting several of FSU’s liberal studies requirements.
"Taking the course Global Perspectives in combination with completing the Global Citizenship Certificate has widened my perspective of the world as a whole," said Christopher Jafet, FSU junior studying commercial entrepreneurship. “Having the chance to exercise my skills in intercultural communication is the main benefit I have seen from being involved in these activities. The knowledge and experience I have gained through this process are priceless. I would highly recommend it to those interested!”
Not only does the certificate program help students to become more cross-culturally and globally conscious citizens of the world, but students also receive a transcript notation demonstrating to future employers and graduate schools that they are prepared for today’s global society.
"The Global Citizenship Certificate is a wonderful pathway to help engage your knowledge of the world around you through critical thinking," said Katherine Alonso, GCC student and junior studying philosophy and international affairs. "The courses, intercultural events, and sustained international experiences will help you to be included in FSU's international community and beyond," Alonso said. "Every experience/event you attend, course you complete, and each person you meet helps you develop into a more open-minded and empathetic individual who is ready to experience the world in a more critical-thinking fashion."
