Andrea Strickland and the Haiti Grass Project
Andrea Strickland, a senior majoring in Political Science with a Pre-Law track, is making waves in her community by spearheading fundraising efforts for the Haiti Grass Project. Her involvement showcases the power of grassroots initiatives and the impact that determined individuals can have on global issues.
Andrea's journey with the Haiti Grass Project began in her Global Perspectives class while listening to a presentation by Dr. Tawainga Katsvairo, the Executive Director of the non-profit Better Universe and Citizens about the Haiti Grass Project. Dr. Katsvairo was invited to speak to the class by the instructor, Dr. Bryant Harden. Captivated by the project's goals and the potential to make a tangible difference, Andrea decided she wanted to get involved.
After successfully organizing a fundraising drive within her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, Andrea raised over $600. Witnessing the direct impact of her efforts, Andrea became inspired by the Haiti Grass Project's mission to not only combat environmental issues but also stimulate the Haitian economy by providing livable wages. This resonated deeply with her commitment to addressing global challenges.
She saw firsthand the positive changes brought about by the Haiti Grass Project in the lives of the Haitian community through Dr. Tawainga’s presentation. The reduction of soil erosion, improved living conditions, and stabilized soil preventing mudslides are just a few examples of the project's transformative effects.
The project's comprehensive approach to addressing poverty and environmental issues deeply resonated with Andrea's passion for global change. The practical solutions provided by the Haiti Grass Project in breaking the cycle of poverty through economic development and intercultural communication appealed to her sense of responsibility. For Andrea, the most profound moments came from witnessing Dr. Tawainga's passion during his presentation. The impact of the Haiti Grass Project on the local community underscored the real and immediate change that could be achieved through collective efforts.
As the service director of Kappa Alpha Theta, Andrea utilized her position to introduce the Haiti Grass Project to her sorority. Her commitment to service and her belief in the project's mission made it a perfect fit for fundraising. She recognized the importance of utilizing her platform to raise awareness and funds. Her role as the service director provided her with the perfect opportunity to mobilize her sorority members for a cause she deeply believed in.
During a chapter meeting, Andrea explained the mission of the Haiti Grass Project and encouraged her sorority sisters to contribute. The enthusiastic response demonstrated the value they placed on supporting such a meaningful cause. The efforts paid off as Kappa Alpha Theta collectively donated $636 to the Haiti Grass Project. Andrea's leadership resulted in a significant contribution, directly impacting the lives of Haitian individuals and families.
Andrea recently joined the Global Citizenship Certificate Program, driven by her experiences in Global Perspectives class and Dr. Harden's mentorship. Aspiring to attend law school in 2024, she sees the program as a valuable opportunity to build intercultural relationships and enhance her understanding of global matters.
In the coming semester, Andrea plans to volunteer/intern with the Haiti Grass Project to fulfill her sustained experience requirement for the Global Citizenship Certificate. Her dedication to making a positive impact on a global scale exemplifies the spirit of engaged and responsible citizenship. As she prepares for law school, Andrea Strickland is not only shaping her academic future but also actively contributing to a brighter, more sustainable world.
