Immerse yourself in diverse cultures through a combination of coursework and engaging experiences with the Global Citizenship Certificate. Choose from 500+ courses that not only incorporate a cross-cultural or global theme, but also satisfy liberal studies requirements.

Enrolled undergraduate students choose three elective courses from an approved list (one of which can be a language course); take Global Perspectives, the certificate's foundational course which explores global issues and develops intercultural communication skills; attend eight intercultural events; and complete one sustained intercultural experience domestically or abroad.

The certificate helps students develop a global mindset and gain an understanding of global issues. With an increased awareness and appreciation of cultural differences, students will gain the confidence necessary to interact successfully in a diverse workforce.

The Global Citizenship Certificate ties classroom and cultural experiences together. Active learning and reflection, together with cross-cultural interaction and dialogue, help students develop skills and competencies needed to be a global-ready graduate.

“Classes and outside intercultural events and experiences complement each other,” said Dr. Elçin Haskollar, GCC Program Director and Faculty. “In class, students learn about essential concepts and theories about global and cross-cultural issues, develop critical thinking skills and learn different perspectives. Outside of class, they attend events, participate in experiences and complete a variety of assignments and projects that link theories and concepts learn in the classroom with how those theories and concepts show up in a different cultural setting and also allow them to take part in intercultural communication.”

The GCC program provided Karina Amalbert, GCC alumna and FSU student pursuing a master’s degree in urban and regional planning, with valuable tools for cross-cultural communication and a foundational knowledge of global issues and theories.

“Global Perspectives was an introduction to the complex theories behind global knowledge,” Amalbert said. “In this class I was able to challenge myself within group work and expand my knowledge of how different perspectives around the world develop with a solid framework to back me up!”

Amalbert completed her sustained experience with FSU’s Global Scholars program. However, there are dozens of ways for students to meet this requirement both globally and locally.

Students receive a transcript notation demonstrating to future employers and graduate schools that they are prepared for today's global society.
