Academic Year Programs in Communication, Literature and Chemical Engineering
For those students who want to develop their English skills, deepen their knowledge in their discipline, and explore American culture in greater depth, FSU has designed a sustained experience in which students spend an academic year on the FSU campus.
The Academic Year Programs offer a course selection with a heavy emphasis on Communication (Special Academic Year Program in Communication), Literature (Special Academic Program in Literature), and also a Special Academic Year Program in Chemical Engineering. The available courses have been selected to give students a typical FSU academic experience; some of the courses are large lecture-style classes, some are much smaller seminars. Many of these classes will afford opportunities to study various aspects of culture, and all are likely to be useful to students who are interested in intercultural interaction and developing global competencies.
FSU is able to offer these uniquely structured Special Academic Programs to a larger group of students than a typical exchange program. These programs provide students with a far less expensive program than degree-seeking international students must pay. The less expensive program costs are possible because students enroll in a pre-selected course of study instead of having the opportunity to choose any course or field of study listed in the Florida State University course catalog.
Students will live in either Southgate Campus Center or Rogers Hall. Both are conveniently located on or adjacent to the Florida State campus, so it will be very easy to walk to classes and the dining hall, as well as to the many extra-curricular lectures and activities always occurring at FSU.
FSU will hire one or more FSU students who would serve as a Peer Mentor to field questions students might have about college campus life in the United States. Peer Mentors also facilitate activities and excursions designed to help the Center for Global Engagement achieve its goal of seeing Special Academic Program students integrated into campus life and every-day interactions with FSU students.
