TN - Worker through NAFTA Treaty
The TN nonimmigrant classification is used for Canadian and Mexican professionals who work in occupations specified in Appendix 1603.D.1 of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and who are coming to the United States for temporary employment.
TN status is granted for a period of up to three years at a time, with no specific maximum number of years that the status can be used. Canadians do not need a visa to enter the U.S in TN status. Mexican nationals apply for TN visas at a U.S. Consulate and the status is granted upon their entry to the U.S. For both Canadians and Mexicans, it is possible to change status to TN, change employers, or extend a current TN stay in the U.S. by filing a petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
The Center for Global Engagement at Florida State University will assist departments by advising them on eligibility requirements and the documentation the university must provide in order to assist Canadian or Mexican professionals obtain or extend TN status.
