J-1 Scholars/Exchange Visitors
Temporary Identification Number
Inviting departments must obtain a temporary identification number for their visiting scholars by e-mailing Chenelle Wester in Human Resources. She will need the scholars first and last name, date of birth, citizenship, gender, and the scholar's e-mail address. The number will be e-mailed as soon as it is assigned. The temporary identification number will be used for university housing applications, for the insurance plan offered by Thagard Student Health Center, for courtesy appointments for unpaid scholars, and for the FSU Card. Departments should remind scholars that the number is given to them for campus use only (university housing, university insurance), that it is not a Social Security number or federally issued number, and that it should not be used for any purpose outside of campus (off-campus apartment leases, bank accounts, cell phone contracts, etc.). If the visiting scholar already has a Social Security number obtained during a previous stay in the U.S., that number should be used for housing, insurance, their appointment, and all other forms needing an identification number. The temporary ID number should not be obtained when the visiting scholar already has their own SSN.
The 849 number assigned by Human Resources is the same number which should be used during the initial 9 week period a paid scholar is awaiting their Social Security number, but it should not be used outside the FSU campus.
