Beyond Borders: Application

Eligibility: All Florida State University students with an interest in the target culture and in developing cross cultural competencies and leadership skills are eligible to apply. Some knowledge of German is recommended for Germany but not required.

Application: Complete the application below with required information. Attach your essay and resume including two references before submitting the application.

Essay Question Guidelines: Please address all of the following questions in your essay:

1. Why do you want to participate in this program and what do you hope to learn from the exchange?
2. Teamwork is a vital part of the Beyond Borders experience. Please explain what qualities about yourself make you a good team member.
3. Describe any international travel you have already taken (by yourself or with a group) and explain what you gained from the experience. If you have not traveled abroad, describe why this program appeals to you as your first trip outside of the United States.

Application Deadlines: The application, essay, and resume with contact information for two references is due September 21, 2012 for Jamaica and October 26, 2012 for Germany.

Selection: Applicants selected for an interview will be notified by email. Ten to twelve participants (plus alternates) will be selected based on their interest in the host culture, community service, leadership, knowledge of host language and ability to work in a group. Students selected for Jamaica will be notified in September and for Germany in November.

Program Requirements: Participants will be required to register and successfully complete the 1 credit hour course INR 3931: Beyond Borders during the Spring 2013 semester. Students will also be actively involved in the planning and hosting of the incoming Beyond Borders students from their selected program (October for Jamaican group; February/March for German group). Beyond Borders will make all travel arrangements and purchase group tickets to and from the host country. Any student who wants to stay after the end of the official program will make return travel arrangements at his/her own expense.
