International Ph.D. Student Sings, Conducts in University Singers Concert

Henry Pranoto, Ph.D. candidate from Indonesia studying music education with a focus on choral conducting, will sing and conduct in FSU’s University Singers Concert on Tuesday, April 18 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in Opperman Music Hall.

This University Singers Concert will feature Balinese Gamelan music. Pranoto and other university singers will be performing a Janger-Balinese piece.

Pranoto is a teaching assistant for Dr. Kevin Fenton, professor of choral conducting and ensembles. After graduation, Pranoto wants to give back to his community by building an institution affiliated with the U.S. that can establish an ethnically diverse music program.

“I would like to build a host institution for international students to come and learn about the local culture and bring it back out into the world,” said Pranoto. “I keep in contact with the mayor in my hometown of Semarang. I will be going back to assist with the Semarang Music Society concert on October 28, which involves 300 young people locally. My hope is to continue to work with local officials after graduation to bring my dream to life.”

The University Singers Concert is free and open to the public. Please see music.fsu.edu/Concerts-and-Events for more information.
