The internship opportunities available are varied. Some positions will provide the opportunity to learn immigration rules and regulations that pertain to international students in the US. Others focus more on programs and activities designed to help international students become more familiar with US culture and academic culture, as well as programs that engage both US and international students to promote cross-cultural understanding.

With hands-on work, interns will gain knowledge and understanding about how this office works within the Division of Student Affairs and the services that it provides to the FSU campus and community. Our internships provide an excellent opportunity for the student to learn about the field of international education.

Global Event Staff

OPEN- for Fall 2013 and Spring 2014

The position serves as building staff of The Globe (Global and Multicultural Engagement Building) during the evening and weekend hours of operation.  S/he will provide general assistance to the guests of The Globe, to maintain continuity of service of The Globe and after hour events. Event staff are required to maintain a professional attitude and appearance at all times, and must adhere to the guidelines indicated below.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Aid the professional staff of Center for Global and Multicultural Engagement in the operation of the various facilities.
  • Ensure guests are given proper equipment needed for given events.
  • Report maintenance and repair needs to the Scheduling Coordinator in order to maintain a clean facility.
  • Enforce the rules, policies, and other regulations set down by the university and The Globe.
  • Record and report general activity, unusual incidents, injuries, damaged property, or emergencies in an Event Staff Report for each shift.
  • Clear and secure all areas of the building at closing as well as open the facility on weekend events. Includes ensuring rooms in the complex are locked and unlocked as scheduled.
  • Provide excellent customer service to all customers in building. Customers include all students, faculty, staff and outside community members that work, visit, or otherwise have contact with The Globe.
  • To perform other duties as assigned.
General Job Qualifications:
  • Must have a flexible schedule with availability after 5 pm on weeknights, and all day (shift times vary) on weekends.
  • Must be able to follow established procedures for building use and enforce building use policies. Must display a cooperative spirit with supervisors, co-workers and guests.
  • Must be able to conceptualize oral and written instructions required to setup and break-down rooms.
  • Customer service experience.
  • Be able to lift at least 25lbs
  • Must maintain a 2.5 or better GPA.
Schedule and Pay:
  • Will work 5-15 hrs per week depending on number of shifts and schedule availability.
  • Pay $8.00/hr.

CGE Program Assistant Intern

OPEN - Fall 2013
Dates: August 19th - December 13th

Description: Provide information and assistance at the Center for Global Engagement's front desk. Support the International Student and Scholar Services team by performing general front desk operations as well as assisting with file maintenance, data entry, and other duties as needed. This position offers an opportunity to learn about immigration rules and regulations as they pertain to F-1 and J-1 international students and scholars as well as H-1B international employees. The Program Assistant will also gain exposure and insight into the multitude of programs and activities sponsored by the Center for Global Engagement.

Requirements:

  • Junior or Senior class standing, or graduate student
  • Majoring in a field related to international affairs or education - or have a strong career goal related to these fields
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Must be willing to interact with the public in a professional capacity

This position is open to both domestic and international students.

Time: Schedule varies between morning and afternoon shifts. Minimum commitment - 20 hours per week.

Reflections Art Gallery Curator/Intern

CLOSED - for Fall 2013 & Spring 2014

Description: The Reflections Art Gallery space is shared between the two departments housed in The Globe building - The Center for Global Engagement and The Center for Multicultural Affairs. The Reflections Art Gallery was created to provide an exhibition space for international artists who are part of the university and Tallahassee communities. The goal is to present art work from different countries and cultures and lead diverse audiences in discovering the unique material, aesthetics, and intellectual achievements in art and culture around the globe. It offers a venue for a global artistic experience, without having to travel.

Responsibilities:

  • Researches and solicits diverse artists for shows in the gallery
  • Selects pieces and plans shows according to a given monthly theme or chooses a subject and builds a cohesive show around chosen subject
  • Communicates with CGE and CMA gallery representative to plan monthly exhibits and get approval for each show
  • Schedules and oversees collection or drop-off of all art pieces prior to each show and ensures safe storage and return to owner after each show
  • Hangs or displays each exhibit
  • Creates a biography or show description poster for each show

Requirements:

  • Experience in art creation and/or artist selection
  • Knowledge of gallery operations
  • Experience handling, assembling and hanging artworks
  • Independent worker who is able to execute responsibilities with minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational skills

Time: 5 hours a week / no more than 20 hours a month

Global Pathways Certificate Program Intern

  • Full-time, degree-seeking student in 3rd or 4th year of college, with at least a 3.0 GPA

English Conversation Club Tutors

Description: English Conversation Club tutors needed to help international students and scholars practice English speaking. You will be meeting with a group of international students and scholars (group size vary, from 3-10) and help them practice conversational English. Great experience if you are interested in teaching English abroad and/or need service hours while at FSU!

Requirements:

  • Full-time, degree-seeking student (graduate or undergraduate)
  • with at least a 3.0 GPA
  • Native English language skills
  • Enthusiastic to help international students and scholars practice conversational English and improve their speaking skills
  • Interested in learning about different countries and cultures
  • Previous international/intercultural experience is a plus
  • Must be committed, on time and prepared to lead conversations every week
  • Any major is welcome to apply! Graduate students encouraged to apply!

Time commitment:

  • Must commit for a full semester
  • Minimum 1 hour per week
    (Class meets once per week for at least an hour at the Globe, lounge area)

*Note: English Conversation Club only meets in the afternoons, so please make sure you have 1 hour- same time and same day each week- available. Classes are typically scheduled between 3-6pm.
